What are the cookies?

Cookies are little text files sent from the site to the person concerned terminal (usually to the browser), where they are memorized to be sent again to the site at the next visit of the same user. A cookie cannot recall any other data from the user’s hard disk nor sent worms or get e-mail addresses. Each cookie is unique for the user’s web browser. Some of cookie’s functions can be transferred to other technologies. In this document the term “cookie” refers both to the cookie, correct in the strictest sense of the word, and to all similar technologies.

Type of cookie

There can be first or third party cookie, meaning the “first part” cookies the cookie stating as a domain the website, while the “third part” cookie are the cookies referring to external domains.

Third party cookie are necessarily installed by an external subject, always defined “third party”, non-managed by the website. These subjects can also possibly install “first party” cookie, saving theirs on the domain of the website.

Another type of cookie  are the so called “Flash Cookie” (Local Share Objects), used inside Adobe Flash Player to provide some contents, as video clips or animation, in order to remember personal settings and preferences. Flash cookie are filed on the device, but are managed through an interface which is different from the one provided by the used browser.

Cookies Nature

As far as their nature is concerned, there are several types of cookie

Technical cookie

Technical cookie are used just in order to “realize the transmission of a communication on an electronic communication web, or to the extent strictly necessary to a provider of the information society specifically requested by the subscriber or by the user to provide this service (art. 122, paragraph 1, of the Code)

They are not used for further purposes and are usually installed by the owner himself or by the manager of the website. They could be divided into:

  • Surfing or session cookie, that guarantee normal web surfing and the use of the website (allowing, for example, a purchase or the authentication to enter in reserved areas); they are actually necessary for the website proper functioning;
  • Analytics cookie, similar to the technical cookie if used directly by the web master to get information, in aggregate form, about the amount of users and how they visit the website, in order to improve site performances;
  • Feature cookie, that allow the user web surfing, according to some pre-selected criteria (e.g., language, selected products for the purchase) in order to improve the service. For these cookie’s installation user’s prior consent isn’t requested (further information in the paragraph below, cookie’s administration)

 

Profiling cookie

Profiling cookie are used to create user profiles and to send advertising messages according with user’s chosen preferences for his web surfing.

In order to use profiling cookies subject consent is requested. According to the law (further information in the paragraph below, cookie’s administration) user can authorize or deny his consent to cookie’s installation through options provided in “Cookie’s administration” section.

In case of third party cookies, the website does not have a direct control of every single cookie and it cannot check them (it cannot either install or cancel them). You can still manage these cookies by browser’s set up (follow the instructions below) or by the websites suggested in “Cookie’s administration” section.

Cookie’s duration

Cookies have a duration imposed by their expiry date (or by a specific action, like browser’s closure) set up at the moment of the installation

Cookies can be:

  • Momentary or session cookies: they are used to file temporary information, they allow you to connect actions that took place during a specific session and are removed from the computer at the browser closure;
  • Persistent cookie: they are used to file information, for example name and login password, in order to avoid the user to digit them again every time he visit a specific site.

They remain memorized even after the browser’s closure.

Cookie management

Due to the rules of the Personal Data Protection Code (d.lg. If the consent has already been given but you want to change cookie’s authorizations, you have to cancel them through the browser, because otherwise the ones already installed will not be removed. In particular, it must be pointed out that is not possible to check third party cookies, so if the consent has already been given previously, it is necessary to continue with cookie’s cancellation through the browser (dedicated section) or asking the “opt-out” directly to third parties or through the website.
